Hydrangeas are a favorite of flower arrangers because of their giant, fluffy flower heads. Moonrock™ is bound to be a favorite for its densely flowered panicles of blooms and very modern color combination of creamy white and lime green centers. The flowerheads of Moonrock™ Hydrangea are held out on exceptionally sturdy stems that need far less staking than older varieties.
Moonrock™ Hydrangea blooms on new wood every year, so it is less susceptible to losing its flowers due to a late freeze in the spring. This vase shaped, deciduous shrub will bloom non-stop from late May until early in the fall without fail. The lovely green foliage turns to shades of yellow, orange and red after the first frosts. Moonrock™ Hydrangea works as either a specimen plant or planted in large groups in a specialist garden such as a moonlight garden or white garden.
Moonrock™ Hydrangea Care
Hydrangea like to be planted in well drained soil that still retains moisture. Mulching these shrubs early in the spring will help to keep the soil moist and cool. Moonrock™ Hydrangea has a wide range of hardiness zones and will need more shade the higher the hardiness zone. Ideally, a little extra afternoon shade will keep Hydrangea from wilting in the summer heat of the southern states. The soil pH will not affect this variety of Hydrangea. Planting in either slightly acidic or alkaline soil is fine.
Pruning of this Hydrangea is very easy. A clean up in the late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Any dead, dying, diseased or diagonal branches can be cut out to make way for new growth. Fertilizing should also be done early in the spring. A well balanced, slow release fertilizer is recommended.
Moonrock™ Hydrangea Spacing
Moonrock™ is a very compact growing Hydrangea and keeps its general shape well throughout the blooming period. Height of 4-6 feet and a width of 4-6 feet. This Hydrangea will need to be placed at 5 feet on center when planted near others. Container growing this Hydrangea is a great option. A pot with at least 24 inch diameter is recommended.
