How can you get a rose to bloom in the shade? Typically you cannot because they are sun loving perennials. But how about if you plant Nonstop Mocca Scarlet Tuberous Begonias in that same shady spot? Voila! You have a fully double true red flower that has a bonus of looking like a fully double rose with a dark green/purple deeply veined leaf. Beautiful and gives you options for that full to part shade location.
Tuberous begonias are native to Bolivia, NW Argentina and Peru, Zones 10 through 11b, where they grow as a perennial in low light conditions. They tolerate early morning sun but the heat of the afternoon will kill them. Great news for shade trees and woodland edge gardeners. It is not attractive to deer so double bonus there. In Zones 3-9 they are treated as an annual, planted after the danger of the last frost has passed.
Nonstop® Mocca Scarlet Begonia Care
Care for tuberous begonias begins with selecting the proper location for them. Early morning sun leading to deep afternoon shade, and well draining soil that is kept moderately and evenly moist will be what it needs to remain healthy and give you long lasting color and vigor. Regular feedings with a water soluble fertilizer, and not allowing them to dry out too often will help keep this annual healthy. Soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral at 6.0 to 6.5.
Deadheading will prompt the plant to rebloom and is a good habit to get into with a tissue-like double bloom. Keeping the soil clean of debris will go a long way to preventing soil borne diseases. Dead or yellowing leaves should be removed immediately as well to keep from attracting insect pests. No pruning beyond the good housekeeping is needed to keep this plant beautiful.
Nonstop® Mocca Scarlet Begonia Spacing
Spacing is crucial with begonias. Growing to 12 inches tall and 14 inches wide, plant with a spacing of 12 to 14 inches between plants to increase air circulation for the prevention of powdery mildew, a disease that can frequently plague tuberous begonias. Avoid crowding your containers or landscapes, and try to locate the plants in an area where the air is not stagnant. Proper placement and care of this beautiful annual will reward you with summer long color.
