Bring a calm, forest feel indoors with the Norfolk Island Pine. Soft, tiered branches and naturally symmetrical form make it a year-round statement plant that also doubles as a living holiday tree. It thrives in bright, indirect light, grows slowly, and asks for simple, consistent care—an easy way to add vertical green to mantels, corners, and tabletops without the mess of a cut Christmas tree.
Norfolk Island Pine prefers a bright room away from harsh afternoon sun and drafts. Water when the top inch of potting mix is dry, letting excess drain fully so roots never sit in water. Normal household temperatures around 60–75°F work well, and average indoor humidity is fine, though the plant appreciates a little extra moisture in very dry homes. Rotate the container weekly for even growth and keep it a bit cooler once decorated to extend freshness during the holidays. LEDs are best if you plan to add mini lights.

FAQs
Is it a true pine?
No. Despite the name and its classic silhouette, Norfolk Island Pine is a tropical conifer (Araucaria heterophylla), not a true pine. It’s well suited to indoor life with bright, indirect light and steady care.
Can I keep it indoors year-round?
Yes. It is commonly grown as a houseplant. Provide bright, indirect light, water when the top inch of soil is dry, and maintain typical room temperatures. A bit of added humidity in winter can help prevent browning tips.
How often should I water?
Check weekly and water when the top inch of mix feels dry. Pour off any excess from decorative cachepots so roots don’t sit in water. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline.
Does it need pruning or frequent repotting?
Very little. Only remove dead tips or branches and avoid cutting the top leader. Repot every two to four years or when roots fill the pot, moving up just one size to keep growth manageable.
Is it safe for pets?
Norfolk Island Pine is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Even non-toxic plants can cause mild stomach upset if nibbled, so it’s still wise to place out of reach of curious pets.
Can I decorate it for the holidays?
Absolutely. Use lightweight ornaments and cool-touch LED string lights to avoid heat on the foliage, and keep the plant a few feet from heat vents or fireplaces to prevent drying.
