Nye Bevan English Rose enhances the outlook of all those who encounter its delicate beauty and distinctive Myrrh aroma. It is aptly named after Aneurin “Nye” Bevan, a benevolent UK healthcare proponent. This English perennial shrub rose, bred by the acclaimed David Austin, features 3-inch, cupped, pale yellow blooms, lightly fading to cream from the centers to the outer petals. Resembling a taffeta tutu, each floret consists of more than forty gossamer petals tucked loosely around a flaxen center. Complemented by lustrous green foliage, this compact showstopper grows to 3.5 feet.
The blooms emit a sweet fragrance with spicy hints of licorice. Use it in a foundation planting or near a window where its beauty and fragrance can be appreciated. Introduced in 2021, this vigorous shrub is cold hardy in zones 5 to 11. It is not deer resistant and should be protected in rural areas prone to deer foraging.
Nye Bevan English Rose Care
Nye Bevan English Rose thrives in full sun. Plant this gorgeous ornamental in a hole as deep as the root ball and a few inches wider than the container. This perennial prefers loamy, moist, slightly acidic soil with a pH near its golden spot, 6.5. Improve deficient soil by mixing in compost. Water deeply, providing 1-2 inches of water weekly when the soil feels dry. Once or twice during the summer, apply a slow-release fertilizer for roses.
This plant blooms on new wood, so prune it during early spring. Cut back all stems to 12 to 18 inches, removing dead, damaged, diseased, and crossed stems. For potted plants, select a container with a diameter of 12 inches. Cover with the root zone with mulch to overwinter this plant in colder climates.
Nye Bevan English Rose Spacing
Space each rose 2-3 feet apart in hedges and borders. Plant with companions such as verbena, lavender, Russian sage, and foxglove. Nye Bevan grows well in containers as a single specimen. Make beautiful cut flower bouquets with this shrub’s aromatic blossoms mixed with artemisia, delphinium, dusty miller, celosia, cosmos, hydrangea, and strawflower.
