Ocean Sunset™ Orange Glow Ice Plant (Delosperma hybrida) displays bright orange flowers from late spring to early autumn. Its evergreen, succulent foliage stays low, typically under 4 inches in height. The striking color adds a welcome pop to rock gardens and borders. It outperforms other groundcover choices by combining bright color with reliable toughness.
Originally from rocky regions of Africa, this succulent tolerates harsh conditions, and deer tend to avoid it. Disease concerns are minimal, and it survives drought with little maintenance once established. This plant fits many needs, including erosion control, walkway edging, and container gardening. Its thick leaves store moisture, making it a strong option for water-wise landscapes.
Ocean Sunset™ Orange Glow Ice Plant Care
Site it in full sun with sandy or gravelly soil that drains well. Water sparingly to avoid rot, and feed occasionally with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season. Aim for a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, though it adapts to various soil types. Leave space around each plant so the foliage can dry quickly.
Remove faded blooms to keep fresh color coming. Pinch or thin overlapping stems if needed, and shear lightly after the main flowering cycle. Trimming in late summer helps keep its shape before colder weather arrives. In cool climates, move container-grown plants indoors or provide shelter during winter.
Ocean Sunset™ Orange Glow Ice Plant Spacing
For groundcover or group plantings, place them 8 to 12 inches apart. Single specimens in borders or rock gardens appreciate extra room to spread. Use a container at least 8 inches wide for a newly transplanted ice plant, and upgrade the pot size as it matures.
