The leafy Osaka Red Flowering Cabbage introduces bold color and plenty of texture to a planting. The Brassica oleracea Osaka 'Red' has ruffled leaves in a purplish-red shade. Outer leaves are deep, dark green with purple-red veining for added color and a coordinated look. The leaves grow in a rosette, making the plant look like a giant flower.
Ornamental cabbage is an excellent fit for a mixed bed, border, or container. Feature the Osaka Red Flowering Cabbage near the front of a bed so the lovely foliage is on full display. The color becomes more intense as the weather gets colder. The purple hues complement companion plants with white or red flowers, or can create a stylish monochromatic look next to purple-toned flowers.
Osaka Red Flowering Cabbage Care
Plant Osaka Red Flowering Cabbage in full sun and in fertile, moist soil that is slightly acidic and well drained. Keep the soil damp, but avoid overly wet or dry conditions. Apply a slow-release fertilizer when planting.
The Osaka Red Flowering Cabbage is grown as an ornamental annual. Remove dead or damaged growth during the growing season, and remove the entire plant at the end of winter.
Osaka Red Flowering Cabbage Spacing
Osaka Red Flowering Cabbage stands 6 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Space plants 12 inches apart for a dense, leafy look. Grow one plant in a 12-inch wide container.
