Plants Included In Parade Picnic Annual Combination
Here is an annual combination for the record books! True cobalt blue flowers, coupled with tough as nails white flowers and fiery scarlet red flowers all combine to provide the truest most patriotic annual collection of the summer. Purists will agree that this is the most accurate depiction of our red, white and blue colors ever seen in an annual combination.
Introducing Evolvulus, the dwarf morning glory, to the scene as the best true blue flowering annual you can find. Add the improved performance of hybridization where we take the best of the parent plants and make them better, and you have an absolutely stunning display for your summer container gardens. Couple this with the pure white euphorbia hybrid, Diamond Snow and the fiery scarlet red Sunpatiens Compact Fire Red for a show stopping display. Unique among most annuals is the drought resistance all three of these plants exhibit once established.
Parade Picnic Annual Combination Care
Each of these annuals are very similar in that they have the same basic needs: full sun, light fertilizing with water soluble fertilizer every two weeks and a light-weight potting mix to prevent the dreaded soggy soil. Some afternoon shade is appreciated in the hottest regions but evolvulus prefers straight on sun to maintain its silvery green foliage. It is best not to fertilize too heavily to prevent leggy growth. Tending to be herbaceous foliage, meaning that stems and sometimes leaves retain water, these plants can tolerate dry periods. Maintain a regular watering schedule during drought for best performance.
Choose a 12 inch hanging basket or patio container for the 4 ¼ inch pot size plants as these are vigorous growers and will quickly fill and spill over your planter. Plant the Sunpatiens in the background of your planter as it will top out at about 30 inches tall and spread about 20 inches wide whereas the dwarf morning glory is only about 8 inches tall and trails about 12 inches. The euphorbia is about 18 inches tall and wide and can trail down the front about 18 inches as well. Consider purchasing additional dwarf morning glories and euphorbias to alternate across the front for a pleasing arrangement.
Parade Picnic Annual Combination Ideas
All three annuals make wonderful landscape plants due to their drought and heat tolerance once fully established. If your soil is heavy and gets soggy, consider amending it with sand and perlite, or create raised beds for the adequate soil drainage that is so crucial. Mass them out in full sun for a spectacular display of untouchable color and have your friends and neighbors asking you where you got such an awesome parade of color.
