Growing Zones
Succulents have become very popular in the last few years, mainly due to the amazing structural details they have. Peggy is one of the most dramatic of the hardy succulents . The colors this Sempervivum has range from greens, oranges to reds to browns and are evergreen in all hardiness zones, from 3-8. The pink blooms add even more color and interest to this modestly spreading ornamental. Peggy Hens and Chicks will make a bold modern statement, growing in containers that are shallow as well as covering that hard to plant dry section of the garden.
Sempervivum are disease and deer resistant. They prefer an open, free draining soil that is not very fertile. A full sun position will keep Peggy colorful and blooming through the Summer months. Native to the mountains of Southern Europe, Sempervivum does not require much fertilizer or care. They will reproduce many tiny offset plants. These are the Chicks and can be easily transplanted to another pot or location at any time of the year.
Peggy Hens and Chicks Care
Hens and Chicks require very little care. They thrive on low water either in a container or planted in the ground. They make interesting hanging basket partners with other hardy succulents. Also useful as a slow spreading ground cover in any dry, rocky parts of your garden. Full sun is the best position so that the plants stay vibrantly colored.
The only pruning needed for Peggy Hens and Chicks would be deadheading of any spent flower stems late in the summer. These plants can be divided at any time of the year.
Peggy Hens and Chicks Spacing
Initial spacing of 6 - 12 inches ensures that the plants fill in quickly. For the greatest impact, Hens and Chicks will perform well very closely planted in a container or hanging basket.
