Growing Zones
A legend in pink, Peggy Martin smothers arches, fences, and pergolas with cascades of soft, candy-rose blooms on nearly thornless canes. Famous for its toughness and quick coverage, it rebounds fast after winter and throws repeat flushes from late spring through fall—turning vertical spaces into effortless, old-fashioned romance.
Peggy Martin Climbing Rose Care
Plant in full sun (6+ hours) with fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost. Water deeply at the base to keep soil evenly moist, especially during hot, dry spells; avoid overhead watering. Mulch 2–3 inches to hold moisture and keep roots cool, pulling mulch a few inches back from the canes.
Feed in early spring and again after the first big flush with a rose or balanced slow-release fertilizer. Train new canes early: fan them along a fence or spiral around an arbor, tying loosely with soft ties—canes laid more horizontally produce the most flowers on side shoots.
In late winter, remove dead or crossing wood and shorten laterals to 2–4 buds; avoid hard cutting of main canes unless you’re renewing old growth. Generally shows good disease tolerance with ample sun and air flow. Cold-hardy in many regions (roughly USDA Zones 5–9).
Peggy Martin Climbing Rose Spacing
Plan for 10–15 ft of height with support and about 6–8 ft of trained spread. Along fences or walls, set plants 6–8 ft apart so canes can be fanned without crowding. At arbors or arches, plant one on each side and allow 3–4 ft of base clearance for training.
In large containers, use a sturdy 18–24"+ pot with excellent drainage and pair with a trellis or obelisk; place containers 2–3 ft apart for airflow and easy deadheading.
