Low Maintenance

Petra Croton is grown for bold leaf color, with glossy foliage marked in green, yellow, orange, red, and burgundy. This Codiaeum variegatum 'Petra', also called Croton Petra, variegated croton, and garden croton, can reach about 3 to 5 feet tall indoors and 2 to 4 feet wide with good light and pruning. It gives rooms the color of a flowering plant without needing blooms to carry the display. Our team recommends it for plant owners who can give it a steady bright spot, since the strongest leaf coloring develops with dependable light.

Best Locations For Growing Petra Croton

Grow Petra Croton in a bright living room, kitchen, office, sunroom, bathroom with a window, or warm bedroom. Keep it away from drafty doors, cold window glass, and heating or cooling vents, since sudden changes can cause leaf drop. Croton is toxic to pets and children if eaten, and the milky sap may irritate skin, so place it where curious hands and mouths cannot reach it.

Petra Croton Sunlight Requirements

Petra Croton needs bright light to keep its best coloring. Place it near an east or west-facing window, or close to a south-facing window with light filtering during the hottest part of the day. Low light can lead to greener leaves, stretched growth, and fewer new leaves.

Petra Croton Care

Plant Petra Croton in a rich, well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage holes. Repot every 1 to 2 years in spring when roots fill the pot, moving up just one pot size. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove bare stems, dead leaves, or uneven growth. Some leaf drop after shipping or moving is normal while the plant settles.

Watering Petra Croton

Water when the top 25 to 50 percent of the soil feels dry, soaking the mix thoroughly until excess drains from the pot. Petra Croton prefers higher humidity, so use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting in dry rooms.

Feeding Petra Croton

Feed Petra Croton with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4 to 6 weeks in spring and summer. Hold fertilizer in fall and winter when growth slows, then resume feeding when new leaves begin to form.
