Piilu™ Clematis (Clematis ‘Piilu’) stands out with its two distinct flower forms, appearing as fully double or semi-double blooms in late spring, followed by single flowers later in the season. Each soft pink petal displays a deeper rose bar down the center, creating a captivating multi-toned effect. At just 4–6 feet tall, Piilu remains compact enough for smaller trellises or patio containers while still offering a big show of color. This repeat-blooming variety outperforms many Clematis by delivering multiple waves of eye-catching flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
In addition to its beautiful blooms, Piilu features medium-green, deciduous foliage, making a lush backdrop for the pastel petals. Originally bred in Estonia, this hardy vine tolerates full sun without fading, and deer generally pass it by. Use Piilu to climb fences, arches, or garden posts, or let it trail gracefully along slopes and retaining walls. With such versatility, it’s an ideal choice for cottage gardens, container arrangements, or mixed perennial borders seeking an extra vertical dimension.
Piilu™ Clematis Care
Prepare a planting hole in well-draining, moderately fertile soil, placing the crown about 2–4 inches below ground level to protect dormant buds. Water deeply and regularly to establish strong roots; once settled, maintain moderate moisture but avoid waterlogging. Mulch around the base or plant low-growing perennials nearby to keep roots cool. Full sun brings out the richest pink tones, though partial shade is acceptable, especially in regions with hot summers. A balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring can boost growth and enhance flowering.
Keep pruning to a minimum in late winter or early spring (Pruning Group 2) by trimming the stems back by about a foot or to a pair of healthy buds. Remove any weak or damaged vines at this time to shape the plant and concentrate its energy on vigorous growth. Thinning out excess growth can also encourage more abundant flowers.
For container-grown specimens, watch watering more closely, and consider insulating the pot in colder climates. You can also move pots during extreme cold spells to a protected area like a covered porch or garage.
Piilu™ Clematis Spacing
Allow about 4 feet between plants along a fence or trellis to ensure proper airflow and enough room for the vine to climb. When used as a groundcover or trained over shrubs, position Piilu at least a couple of feet from other plants so it can develop naturally. In containers, select a pot at least 12–14 inches wide to provide ample space for the root system and climbing structure.
