Grafted tree-form hydrangeas make a fabulous statement planted either in the garden or in a decorative container on a patio or deck. This easy-to-care-for specimen ‘tree’ has masses of white flowers that age to shades of pink throughout the summer months. The flower spikes of ‘Pinky Winky can reach up to 16 inches long and make a long-lasting cut or dried flower.

Hydrangeas grafted into tree forms rarely grow taller than 8 feet, allowing them to be used in smaller gardens or directly under utility lines. Container-grown hydrangeas will instantly dress up a deck or patio and tend to avoid deer browsing when placed close to your home and in areas of heavy traffic. Use Pinky Winky as a thriller in a seasonal display mixed with annuals or perennials with shallow root systems. This Hydrangea paniculata is hardy enough to be grown in zone 3 when given a modest amount of winter protection.

Pinky Winky® Hydrangea Tree Care

The delicate pink color of Pinky Winky is not dependent on soil pH, which makes it easy to care for in almost any garden soil. A location that is well draining and has moderately fertile soil is ideal for healthy and vigorous growth. Pinky Winky will bloom dependably in a partly shaded location or a full sun spot that has protection from the hottest part of the day. Fertilize tree hydrangeas at the beginning of the growing season when the leaves begin to appear. A balanced, slow-release formula is perfect for season-long feeding in a single application.

Paniculata hydrangeas bloom on the current season's growth and perform best with pruning in late winter or early spring, before the new growth starts. Remove any winter damage and crossing branches, focusing on thinning dense growth and opening up the center of the canopy. Make cuts just above developing leaf buds to keep new growth compact.

Deadheading is only recommended to preserve a pleasing shape for the canopy and is not often necessary. Allow the flowers to remain on Pinky Winky through the winter to add interesting structure and texture to your garden.

Pinky Winky® Hydrangea Tree Spacing

The overall height of Pinky Winky Tree Hydrangea is 8-10 feet. Typically, 3-4 feet of clearance between the ground and the grafted canopy allows this tree to be easily positioned in a garden bed with existing perennials and shrubs. Space each plant at least 6 feet apart to allow for its mature spread. Plant Pinky Winky in a sturdy container that is at least 20 inches in diameter for long-term growth.
