This tall and colorful grass can add color, height and texture to any native landscape. Prairie Winds Apache Rose Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum) is a strong ornamental grass native to North America. The pink and tan-colored "flowers" form in late summer or fall and rise above densely clumped silvery green leaves. This versatile grass can provide winter color and movement in nearly any sunny location of your yard.

Reaching almost 4 feet high and a compact 30 inches around, the clumping Apache Rose Switch Grass adds height and drama to garden beds, rock gardens or borders. The plant is cold hardy to zone 4 and can take the heat of up to zone 9. It's tough during nearly any weather or condition, including drought. Prairie Winds Apache Rose Switch Grass also is salt tolerant and deer resistant and the seeds are a great food source for birds in winter.

Prairie Winds Apache Rose Switch Grass Care

Prairie Winds Apache Rose Switch Grass is an easy-care plant with a medium growth rate. Although it can handle some drought, your switch grass is happiest if you plant it in slightly moist clay or sandy soil and water it regularly during its first year. Enjoy the plant all summer, fall and winter. Then, cut the clump back to ground in late winter or early spring and watch it grow to nearly 4 feet high year after year.
