The Proven Accents® Purple Queen Spiderwort can flower for weeks on end, but it’s the outstanding purple foliage that really steals the show. With a trailing habit, this Tradescantia pallida’s stems can grow up to 24 inches in length and is often used as an attractive ground cover. In the warmer months of summer, it also produces an array of tiny pink blooms that contrast beautifully against its dark slender leaves.
With an ability to cope with dry conditions, the Proven Accents® Purple Queen Spiderwort is considered drought tolerant once established. If that wasn’t enough, this spiderwort is also resistant to deer and requires little ongoing care. It is ideal for either using as ground cover or as a spiller in containers or over low walls. When planted among pale green foliage plants, its purple leaves really stand out.
Proven Accents® Purple Queen Spiderwort Care
This spiderwort grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, but well-drained soil. Strangely enough, it can tolerate both irregular and regular watering, so it won’t give up while you take a trip away. If the stems become leggy and thin, pinching the tips may help promote a bushier appearance. When actively growing during the warmer months, this plant appreciates light feeding with a liquid balanced fertilizer.
Even though it is commonly grown as an annual or houseplant, the Proven Accents® Purple Queen Spiderwort can also be grown as a perennial in zones 8 and above. However, any freezing temperatures will kill the foliage and cause the plant to go dormant. In zones below 8, you can lift the plant before winter frosts begin.
Proven Accents® Purple Queen Spiderwort Spacing
When given the right conditions, the Proven Accents® Purple Queen Spiderwort can grow to 12-18 inches tall and 12-24 inches wide. If you decide to grow this spiderwort in a group for a mass of color, a spacing of 10 to 14 inches between plants is recommended.
