Artemisia is a deeply lobed, silvery leaf foliage plant that is so versatile that you will want to incorporate it into your container, landscape, cottage or border gardens year after year. Native to North America, specifically the Aleutian Islands, and all over Asia, this cool climate annual thrives in Zones 5a to 9b.

Artemisia thrives in full sun and is also heat and drought tolerant. Woodland edge gardeners, rabbits and deer won’t bother artemisia so plant it in confidence. Its ease of maintenance will win you over if the multiple ways to use it in your gardens does not. Nicknamed beach wormwood, dusty miller and old woman, it is the ages old go-to for accenting your garden annuals and perennials.

This foliar falls in the easy to maintain category and its tolerance for all soil types is incredible. Alkaline soil? No problem. Acid or neutral soil? No problem! You can see why it accompanies so many other plants and adapts to their soil requirements. It requires very little intervention for watering and only medium attention with fertilization. In fact, once paired with other annuals and perennials, it will adapt to its surrounding conditions requiring no special attention for itself.

Deadheading is not necessary. Light pruning or pinching back will keep artemisia within its bounds should it really enjoy where it is located. It makes a great filler in container plants, a low spreading foreground or accent in your landscape or cottage gardens, or a silvery edging to your border plantings.
