Spike, as it is usually called, (Dracaena indivisa ‘spikes’) is a dramatic plant that has leaves shaped like swords. The leaves are sharp and require gloves when they are being handled. Spike is an evergreen plant that is used for its foliage, not its flower. This plant is very low maintenance.
Spike is heat tolerant. It can add vertical interest if planted in a mixed border. While Spike is a perennial, it will not come back if winters are cold; if you plant it in zones cooler than 7a, consider it an annual or bring it in for the winter.
Proven Accents® Spikes Dracaena Care
Fertilize occasionally during the growing season to maintain growth. Since Spike is planted for its foliage, you don’t have to worry about deadheading it. During the growing season, Spike needs the same amount of water as most plants do. Water it less in the cold season. Spike needs well drained soil. It does best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade.
When Spike is small, it can be used as a thriller. As it grows, it will outshine smaller plants and needs to be moved to the landscape or a larger container.
Proven Accents® Spikes Dracaena Spacing
Spike can grow quite large, up to three feet tall and 18 inches wide. Leave a space of 12-18 inches around Spike or it will overwhelm its neighbors.
