- Hard to find variegated leaved sweet potato vine!
A tricolor foliage plant, Proven Accents Tricolor Sweet Potato Vine is the perfect addition to your hanging baskets and large containers as well as your landscape gardens. Dark green heart shaped leaves with pink and white fringes provide a colorful accent to other light shade to full sun annuals. You need this trailing accent vine in your garden!
Native to Central and South American tropical regions, Zone 11a to 11b, it grows as an annual in Zones 3-10, planted out after the danger of the last frost has passed. Primarily utilized as an accent with complementary or contrasting colored flowering annuals, ipomoea provides a trailing cascading interest. Pull tubers up before a killing frost, dry and store them in peat moss in a cool dark location and plant them back out in the spring for year after year color.
Proven Accents® Tricolor Sweet Potato Vine Care
This heat tolerant vine is easy to grow, requiring mildly acidic to neutral soil pH 6.0 to 6.5. It thrives in medium to high light, so a full sun to light shade location is best. It is a medium feeder, requiring fertilization with a slow release fertilizer when first planted out and with a water soluble fertilizer when watering container plants. Humidity is important to this tropical vine as it will not thrive in dry hot conditions without some intervention from you.
Deadheading is not necessary as this vine rarely sets any flowers. Pruning is required if it gets out of its bounds or begins to take over your garden or container space. It will trail over rock walls and up trellises so give it something to do other than crowd out your other plants. Cooler summer temperatures will result in less vigorous growth and more compact plants.
Proven Accents® Tricolor Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
Spacing is crucial as sweet potato vine only grows up to 8 inches tall but spreads up to 36 inches wide. It can trail up to 72 inches in warm humid climates. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart to allow room to grow. Overwatering and poor air circulation will promote fungal diseases. Make sure your soil drains well and use proper spacing to prevent disease. Pair this fun heat loving annual vine with pennisetum, helichrysum, dracaena, verbena and petunia to create a dramatic display in your landscape and container gardens.
