- Trailing dark green foliage with white borders!
Grown primarily for its wonderful trailing vine habit, vinca maculata does have springtime violet flowers. Dark green leaves with creamy white borders are the focal point here, lending a striking visual interest to hanging baskets and containers or your garden bed. While it will grow in full sun, vinca appreciates afternoon shade. Proven Accents ‘Wojo’s Jem’ vinca will make you appreciate the improvements made to this time-honored annual in your garden.
Native to Europe and western Asia, Zones 7a through 10b, this improved vinca hybrid will spare you the invasive properties of its ancestors and help you keep your gardens within bounds. In Zones 2-6 set out well after the danger of the last frost for a spring to summer display.
Proven Accents Wojo's Jem Vinca Vine Care
With a soil preference of pH 5.5 to 6.2, slightly acidic, vincas do require a moderately moist soil with adequate drainage. It is not a heavy feeder, so an application of fertilizer or compost one time a year, or a regular fertilizing program every 2 months or so will keep it happy. Not much bothers vinca, deer won’t browse on it and it is drought tolerant. Light shade will keep vinca vine very happy in climates with hot afternoon sun.
Deadheading is not needed as this is a self cleaning plant. Plant it in the foreground of your containers for an attractive spilling presentation. Trim only if you prefer to have vines shorter for containers or hanging baskets. This makes a nice filler for an annual bed presentation.
Proven Accents Wojo's Jem Vinca Vine Spacing
While only growing 3 to 6 inches tall, and trailing up to 18 inches long, this vine will appreciate a 15 to 18 inch spacing between plants. It pairs beautifully with medium height upright annuals like calibrachoas, lantanas, petunias and other trailing annuals, and adding grasses make a nice spike of interest. Your imagination is the only limit for color choices as the variegated green and cream foliage compliments all other color combinations beautifully.
