Pseudobaileyi Air Plant has rigid silvery greenish-purple tubular leaves that twist and turn from the bulbous base. The primary onion-shaped bulb is usually hollow in form. This air plant produces a long lavender inflorescence that blooms a dashing purple flower. It's a native plant to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Best Locations For Growing Pseudobaileyi Air Plant
This air plant does really well when anchored to a piece of wood or stone with plant tape or a good plant-safe glue. If placed in a terrarium or container, be sure not to cover the roots with rock, soil or moss, as it will suffocate the roots. You can place this air plant outside in zones 9 plus, but it should be protected from temperatures that fall below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pseudobaileyi Air Plant Sunlight Requirements
This air plant prefers filtered bright sunlight. Some direct sunlight is fine, but too much will scorch the leaves. It thrives outside during the spring and summer, and in humid environments.
Pseudobaileyi Air Plant Care
It’s recommended that this air plant be hung upside down or at an angle so water does not accumulate in the bulb. Mist it every two to three days in humid conditions. In dry conditions, mist it every day. Allow the plant to dry thoroughly between mistings. It has fine hair-like roots that are used for anchoring the plant–not for transmission of water and nutrients. It does best with 12 hours of filtered bright sunlight or artificial light. This plant will die after blooming, but will produce”pups” that are easily separated for propagation.
Watering Pseudobaileyi Air Plant
Mist this plant daily in dry environments. It should be watered at least once or twice per month by submerging it for 10-15 minutes. Be sure to turn it upside down and allow the plant to drain excess water from the bulb and leaf structure to prevent rot. Too much water is bad for this air plant and can actually kill it.
Feeding Pseudobaileyi Air Plant
Fertilize with diluted all-purpose plant fertilizer or a good tillandsia fertilizer twice monthly. A formula with an NPK ratio of 17-8-22 is recommended. The plant can be fertilized while you are soaking it. Too much fertilizer can actually burn the plant and stunt growth.
