This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller (tall focal point), Filler (mid-height mass), or Spiller (trailing over the edge).
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Purple Glow earns its name with dense, saturated purple flowers that nearly blanket the foliage instead of scattering lightly across it. Geranium sanguineum ‘Balgerpur103’ forms a compact mound just 10–12 inches tall and 12–14 inches wide, creating a tidy, ground-hugging presence that looks finished from every angle. Compared to older cranesbill selections, this variety delivers heavier flower coverage on a tighter plant. The blooms rise just above the finely cut green leaves, giving the whole clump a soft halo effect in late spring. We have been planting this low perennial on repeat to fills gaps in our perennial beds.
Purple Glow Cranesbill is a hardy geranium that returns reliably in Zones 4–9 and settles into a dense, weed-suppressing mat over time. After the main flush, a quick trim often encourages a second round of flowers later in the season. Pollinators visit the open-faced blooms, while deer and rabbits usually avoid it. Use it to edge a walkway, mass along the front of a sunny border, or spill slightly over retaining walls.
Purple Glow Cranesbill Geranium Care
Grow Purple Glow in full sun to partial sun, with afternoon shade in hotter climates to keep foliage fresh. Plant in humus-rich, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5–7.5). Keep the root zone evenly moist during the first growing season to establish a deeper roots, then provide moderate irrigation during extended dry periods. A light application of balanced granular fertilizer in early spring is sufficient; overly rich feeding can reduce flowering.
Once the first bloom cycle slows, shear the plant back by one-third to refresh foliage and prompt new buds. Remove winter-worn leaves in early spring before new growth emerges. A thin layer of mulch helps moderate soil temperature, but keep it clear of the crown to prevent rot.
Purple Glow Cranesbill Geranium Spacing
Space plants 14–16 inches apart to form a continuous carpet. For containers, begin with a 1-gallon nursery pot and move to a wider patio container to showcase the spreading form. Pair with catmint, lady’s mantle, and dwarf ornamental grass for complementary tones and contrasting texture.
