Purple Haze Camellia paints the cool months in twilight tones with rose-form flowers in red-purple to purple tones. Camellia sasanqua 'Purple Haze' matures about 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, so it fits smaller foundation beds, shaded borders, and patio containers without outgrowing the space quickly. The blooms usually appear from October into winter, with cooler weather and acidic soil encouraging the richest purple color. It is especially useful near an entry walk because the late-season flowers arrive when many shrubs have already finished.
This sasanqua-type camellia was introduced by Bobby Green of Green Nurseries in Fairhope, Alabama, and was registered in 2012. Its bushy, conical habit stays tidy with light spring shaping, and the glossy green foliage remains attractive through the year. Purple Haze Camellia is moderately deer resistant and tolerates heat, humidity, and short dry spells once established. Use it as a low flowering hedge, a specimen in filtered light, a container focal point, or a refined companion to other acid-loving evergreens.
Purple Haze Camellia Care
Plant Purple Haze Camellia in morning sun with afternoon shade, all-day filtered sun, or bright shade. It grows best in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil, including amended clay, loam, or improved sandy soil. Keep soil acidic, ideally around pH 5.0 to 6.5, to support healthy growth and stronger purple flower tones.
Water deeply after planting, then keep the root zone evenly moist while the shrub establishes. Established plants need less frequent irrigation, but water during extended dry weather or when leaves begin to curl or dull. Mulch with pine bark, pine straw, or composted organic matter to protect shallow roots and help maintain acidity. Feed in late winter or early spring with a slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants, stopping by midsummer.
Prune after flowering has finished and before new flower buds set in summer. Remove crossing branches, trim uneven tips, or shear lightly if growing it as a low hedge. Container plants benefit from winter protection in zone 7, especially during hard freezes or drying wind.
Purple Haze Camellia Spacing
Space Purple Haze Camellia 3.5 feet apart for a solid hedge, or 7 feet apart when each shrub should stand separately. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic, well-draining potting mix. Potted plants dry faster than in-ground shrubs, so check soil moisture often during warm weather and avoid letting the pot sit in water.
For containers, pair Purple Haze Camellia with hellebores, dead nettle, or pansies, which suit cooler-season displays and part-shade conditions. In landscape beds, azaleas and rhododendron share its acidic soil preference and extend the bloom season around the camellia. Leucothoe and ferns are strong companions in filtered light because they enjoy similar moisture and provide contrasting foliage below the evergreen canopy.
