Ranunculus Mix has the look of miniature roses in a broad range of colors on straight, slender stems. The rounded, many-petaled blooms come in warm and cool shades above finely divided green foliage in spring to early summer depending on planting time and climate. The blooms are especially long lasting when cut for arrangements. Ranunculus asiaticus reaches about 15 inches tall and 4 to 6 inches wide.
Persian buttercups originate from the Mediterranean region and neighboring parts of Asia and have been cultivated for centuries for their densely petaled flowers. They perform as cool-season perennials in USDA zones 8 to 10 and are commonly grown as annuals or lifted for winter storage in colder climates. Their straight stems make them especially valuable in cutting gardens, while the compact habit also suits border fronts, raised beds, window boxes, and patio containers. Deer and rabbits generally avoid ranunculus, and all parts of the plant can be irritating or toxic if eaten.
Ranunculus Mix Bulbs Care
Grow ranunculus in full sun, providing at least 6 hours of direct light, with some afternoon shade helpful if spring temperatures rise quickly. Plant the claw-shaped tubers about 2 inches deep in fertile, well-drained loamy or sandy soil, positioning the pointed claws downward. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is suitable.
Soak dry tubers in room-temperature water for about 3 to 4 hours before planting, then water after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during active growth. Let the upper soil begin to dry between waterings rather than leaving the root zone saturated. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer at planting, followed by a light feeding during bud development when plants are actively flowering.
Cut stems for arranging as buds begin to soften and show color, or deadhead faded blooms regularly to prolong flower production. Leave the foliage until it yellows naturally at the end of the season. In zones colder than 8, lift dormant tubers after the foliage dies back, dry them thoroughly, and store them in a cool, dark, dry location until replanting.
Ranunculus Mix Bulbs Spacing
Space tubers about 4 to 6 inches apart in garden beds, with closer spacing creating a fuller cutting patch. For containers, use pots at least 8 to 10 inches deep with open drainage holes and space tubers about 4 inches apart. Container soil should stay moderately moist during growth, and pots can be moved to a cooler location as temperatures rise to help extend flowering.
Ranunculus Mix Bulbs Companion Plants
Dianthus works well nearby because it prefers the same growing conditions as ranunculus and adds a lower layer of flowers around the planting. Spirea can provide a woody backdrop in sunny beds and continues contributing foliage and later flowers after the ranunculus season declines. In containers, lobelia can trail around the edge while the ranunculus stems rise from the center, with both benefiting from cool spring temperatures and evenly moist, well-drained potting mix.
