Growing Zones
Rattlesnake Master or Eryngium yuccifolium is a unique perennial with stunning foliage and flowers. The tiny, thistle-like blooms add tremendous texture and architectural interest. Enjoy the globe-like, greenish-white flowers from May through August. In full bloom, the round flowers emerge from well-branched stems, resembling a bustling solar system. Blue-green, lance-shaped basal foliage gently arches around the base of the plant.
This is a clump-forming perennial native to prairies. As a native plant, Rattlesnake Master does well with minimal care and thrives in somewhat challenging conditions. Use this plant as a specimen or add it to beds and borders where it works well near the back of a group planting. Grow this plant as a perennial in zones 4 through 9.
Rattlesnake Master Care
Full sun and moist, well-draining soil will best support Rattlesnake Master. Use average or low-quality soil because too much organic content can cause growth to become leggy. Water during an extended dry spell.
Deadhead the plant if you don’t want it to self-seed. The plant provides color and visual interest during the winter, but it can set seed if the flowers are left in place. Trim the growth in fall or early spring, depending on your preference.
Rattlesnake Master Spacing
The Rattlesnake Master stands 3 to 5 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. Space plants 2 feet apart when creating a continuous planting.
