Reblooming Tall Bearded Iris Mixture offers a broad mix of flower colors and a possible second bloom later in the season. These Iris germanica selections may flower in shades of blue, purple, white, yellow, peach, and bicolors, with ruffled standards, contrasting falls, and distinctive fuzzy beards. Sturdy stems generally reach about 30 to 40 inches above upright fans of glaucous blue-green foliage that remain attractive after flowering. This mixture is gorgeous along long borders, where the range of colors develops gradually.

These tall bearded iris are selected for a long flowering season, with some capable of producing another round of blooms in late summer or fall when growing conditions are favorable. Established clumps spread from rhizomes and can be divided every few years, gradually increasing the planting. Once settled, bearded iris tolerate dry periods well and are generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Use the mixture in cutting gardens, along driveways, through perennial borders, or in cottage-style beds where the upright foliage can contribute structure between bloom cycles.

Reblooming Tall Bearded Iris Mixture Bulbs Care

Grow in full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of direct light supporting the strongest flowering and best chance of rebloom. Plant rhizomes shallowly in well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil, leaving the upper surface exposed or barely covered. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH around 6.0 to 7.0 is preferred.

Water after planting to settle in the roots. Irrigate during the first growing season when the upper soil dries and rainfall is limited. Mature clumps tolerate drought, though supplemental moisture in late summer can support varieties preparing a second set of flower stalks. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring and a second light feeding after the first bloom period.

Remove spent flower stalks near the base after flowering and trim declining foliage to about 6 inches after frost. Clear away old leaves that may harbor iris borers or leaf spot. Divide crowded clumps every three to four years in mid to late summer, replanting the firm outer rhizomes with healthy fans.

Space rhizomes about 12 to 18 inches apart to give developing clumps room to expand and maintain airflow. For containers, use a wide pot at least 14 inches deep with generous drainage and enough surface area to keep the rhizomes from becoming crowded. In colder climates, container-grown iris benefit from winter shelter in an unheated garage or another protected location.

Reblooming Tall Bearded Iris Mixture Bulbs Companion Plants

Yarrow is a great companion plant because it shares a preference for sun and well-drained soil and extends the flower season after the main iris bloom. Bluebeard can provide a later-flowering shrub layer, adding late-summer color when some reblooming iris may begin producing another flush. In large containers, verbena can fill the lower edge with summer flowers while leaving the iris rhizomes exposed and the tall flower stalks unobstructed.
