Pet Safe

Native to humid regions of Mexico and South America, Guzmania bromeliads make excellent houseplants. This plant features long, shiny leaves that grow from a central cup, and a large, showy, red flower bract. Red Guzmania bromeliads will reward you with a tabletop color show for weeks with little to no effort!

Best Locations For Growing Red Guzmania Bromeliad

Guzmania bromeliads are very popular in interior decorating due to their ease of care and wide range of colors. They can be found in mass plantings in office building lobbies, malls, or waiting rooms. Guzmania plants are generally considered to be non-toxic and safe to have around pets. This plant will add a spectacular pop of red color to your interiors!

Red Guzmania Bromeliad Sunlight Requirements

This bromeliad requires bright indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions better than other bromeliads. An east or west exposure would be best for this plant. Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves of a bromeliad.

Red Guzmania Bromeliad Care

Red Guzmania bromeliad prefers a potting medium that’s designed for orchids, or a blend with good drainage and aeration. To mix your own medium, add one part each of coarse sand, bark and peat (or coco coir). Bromeliads don’t need frequent repotting; usually every 2-3 years is sufficient. They will produce pups which you can propagate within 1-2 years. The mother plant will naturally die back, at which point you can cut back the mother plant and the pup will take her place.

Watering Red Guzmania Bromeliad

When the top inch of soil becomes dry, pour filtered water into the center rosette. About every month, dump out the water to flush out the center cup. It’s usually better to under-water than overwater since this plant is susceptible to root rot. Using distilled, filtered, or rain water is preferred to avoid a buildup of salts. During the active growing season (spring through summer), water several times a week, but in the winter, you only need to water it about every two weeks. Bromeliads love high humidity and enjoy frequent misting with distilled water.

Feeding Red Guzmania Bromeliad

Fertilize sparingly by applying a liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half the strength recommended by the manufacturer every two weeks, spring through summer. At the end of summer, apply a slow-release fertilizer, and hold off on feeding through the winter.
