Red Impression Darwin Hybrid Tulips have the classic spring tulip look, but on a larger scale. The broad, egg-shaped blooms reach up to 6 inches across, with deep red petals that can show plum tones near the outer base and a darker interior marked by a black center ringed in yellow. The buds often begin with lighter cheeks before deepening as they open, adding variation across a planting over several days. We've noticed how well this selection holds its form in exposed beds after spring rain.

Red Impression is a sport of ‘Pink Impression’ and belongs to the Darwin Hybrid group, valued for large flowers, strong stems, and comparatively good repeat performance. It blooms in mid spring, usually April into early May depending on climate, and is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8. The long stems (~20-22 inches) and substantial flowers make it useful for cutting gardens or mass plantings that create a broad field of red. Darwin Hybrids may return for several seasons when grown in sunny, well-drained sites.

Grow in full sun to partial shade, with full sun preferred for sturdy stems and dependable flowering. Plant bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep in well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Set each bulb with the pointed end facing upward.

Plant bulbs about 4-6 weeks before the ground freezes in the fall and water thoroughly. Resume watering during spring growth when the upper soil begins to dry and rainfall is limited. Reduce irrigation as the foliage yellows so the bulbs enter summer dormancy in drier soil. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer as shoots emerge in spring, particularly when growing the bulbs for repeat bloom.

Remove spent flower heads after bloom but leave stems and green leaves in place. Allow the foliage to yellow completely before cutting it away so the bulb can rebuild reserves for the next season. Where tulip fire has occurred, keep water off the foliage when irrigating.
