Bright red, bell-shaped flowers give Red Pride Darwin Hybrid Tulips a strong mid- to late-spring presence in borders and cutting beds. The large blooms reach up to about 5 inches across, set off by upright lance-shaped foliage. The sturdy 22-inch stems are a natural choice for cut-flower arrangements. This selection is a sport of ‘Ollioules’ and belongs to the Darwin Hybrid class, known for substantial flowers and dependable garden performance.
Darwin Hybrid tulips are valued for strong stems and better perennial potential than many other tulip classes when planted in well-drained soil. Red Pride flowers from April into May in USDA zones 3 to 8 and performs well in full sun to partial shade. The large blooms suit mass plantings, foundation beds, and mixed spring borders. In favorable sites, established bulbs can return for multiple seasons when foliage is allowed to mature fully after bloom.
Red Pride Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Care
Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil. Plant bulbs about 6 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is suitable.
Plant bulbs roughly 4-6 weeks before your ground freezes and water in well. Water moderately during active spring growth when rainfall is limited. Reduce irrigation as the foliage begins to yellow so dormant bulbs spend summer in drier soil. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer as shoots emerge in spring to support flowering and future bulb growth.
Deadhead faded blooms once petals fall, but leave the stems and green foliage intact. Remove leaves only after they have yellowed naturally and finished feeding the bulb. A light winter mulch can help moderate soil temperature swings in colder regions.
Red Pride Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Spacing
Space bulbs about 3 to 6 inches apart, using closer spacing for a denser landscape display. For containers, choose a pot at least 10 to 12 inches deep with open drainage holes and enough width for a grouped planting. Protect containers from repeated hard freezes in colder zones, but allow the bulbs to receive the winter chill needed for spring flowering.
Red Pride Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Companion Plants
Bleeding heart pairs well in mixed spring beds because its arching stems and broader foliage create a different form beside the upright tulips. Lilac shrubs can provide a taller spring backdrop and extend the seasonal display as the tulips finish. In containers, snapdragons add another vertical flower form and enjoy the cool temperatures and bright light conditions that suit spring tulips.
