Feature
It’s not much of a secret that the Red Secret Alocasia is stunning. Thin stems support large, oval leaves. The foliage is metallic green with hints of coppery red, giving it an almost iridescent look. The backside of each leaf is a deep burgundy for a subtle and somewhat secretive pop of color. The leaves have deep ridges along the veining and midrib, giving the plant some texture.
The botanical name is Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret,’ and this plant is known by the common name Elephant Ears. This fast-growing plant maintains a compact size, maxing out at up to two feet tall and wide, making it an excellent alternative to some of the much larger Alocasia cultivars.
Best Locations For Growing Red Secret Alocasia
A good location makes caring for the Red Secret Alocasia much easier. Select a spot with increased humidity and plenty of sunlight. Naturally humid sunrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens are a good choice, or use a pebble tray to make the plant feel at home in a living room, bedroom, or office. The Red Secret Alocasia is toxic if ingested, so keep the plant away from young children and pets.
Red Secret Alocasia Sunlight Requirements
The Red Secret Alocasia thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Increased sunlight encourages leaf production and helps the plant reach full size. Southern exposure may be too intense, but an east- or west-facing window often provides plenty of sunlight.
Red Secret Alocasia Care
Repot your Alocasia every one to two years or as needed. Use a container measuring one to two inches larger filled with fertile, moist, well-drained, and acidic soil. This plant generally does not require much pruning beyond removing an occasional faded stem.
Watering Red Secret Alocasia
Water your Red Secret Alocasia when the top inch of potting soil feels dry. This plant requires a lot of water, but standing water will damage the roots. Check the soil before giving the plant a drink to prevent overwatering. Scale back on water in the winter.
The Red Secret Alocasia needs increased humidity and is unwilling to settle for anything less. Elephant Ear plants do best with a humidifier or pebble tray that will boost typical indoor humidity levels.
Feeding Red Secret Alocasia
These plants naturally grow quickly and appreciate regular feedings. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks. Do not feed the Red Secret Alocasia when the plant is dormant.
