The Redbor Purple Kale looks so good it could be grown as an ornamental. Producing deep purple foliage that is not only highly nutritious but also highly attractive, you’ll want to find a prominent spot for this kale. Its leaves can be picked from July until the fall and get sweeter as the temperatures drop. Whether eaten fresh, steamed or as a chip, this is a stunning kale that will keep cropping for months.

Redbor Purple Kale Care

For a long harvest period, Redbor Purple Kale can be planted out as soon as the soil begins to warm up. With a maximum size of two feet high and wide this kale should be spaced with 18 to 24 inches between plants. Redbor thrives when grown in full sun or partial shade and in fertile soil that is neutral to slightly acidic.

Growing Redbor Purple Kale

As a cold-tolerant plant, Redbor can be sown directly in early spring or indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. With harvestable leaves in around 55-75 days, you could be eating this flavorsome kale as early as July. As a hungry plant, this kale prefers a soil enriched with lots of organic matter.

Due to its compact habit, Redbor Purple Kale is ideal for growing in containers. Nevertheless, drainage holes must be present to allow excess water to drain away; a minimum pot diameter of 10-12 inches is advisable.

Watering Redbor Purple Kale

Kale can tolerate some dry conditions but prefers to be grown in moist soil. Watering regularly during the warmer months will help encourage ongoing leaf production.

Feeding Redbor Purple Kale

If planted in fertile soil, extra fertilization is rarely necessary. It does, however, benefit from a layer of mulch, which will help conserve moisture over the summer months.
