The Reverse Spider Plant is also known as Spider Ivy or the Airplane Plant but is botanically named Chlorophytum comosum. With reverse markings to the common spider plant, this Reverse Spider Plant produces long, arching foliage with green centers and a white margin. Possibly one of the easiest houseplants to grow, it is tolerant on many levels and makes a great first houseplant. One of the best air-purifying plants, it is a great choice for any office space or home.
Best Locations For Growing The Reverse Spider Plant
Being considered non-toxic, the Reverse Spider Plant is a great addition to any room and will thrive as long as it receives its basic growing requirements.
Reverse Spider Plant Sunlight Requirements
The Reverse Spider Plant is happiest when placed in bright indirect light, as strong direct sunlight can burn the foliage and cause the markings to fade.
Reverse Spider Plant Care
This popular plant can grow to 24 inches high. However, if it is allowed to trail from a table or shelf it can grow to several feet long. Preferring a temperature of 65 - 85ºF, the Reverse Spider Plant will tolerate most rooms as long as they are not too dry. This spider plant is happy in medium humidity levels but if grown in a dry atmosphere will benefit from being misted every few days. Over time, some leaves may turn brown or die back and can simply be cut away at the base with some sharp and sanitized scissors. One of the easiest plants to propagate, the babies or spiderettes can be snipped off and grown on, in individual pots of soil.
Watering Reverse Spider Plant
The Reverse Spider Plant is tough, although if there is one thing it doesn’t like, it is overwatering, especially during the winter. Hence, it is best to avoid letting this plant sit in an overly wet or soggy soil, which can lead to root rot. As a general guide, it is advisable to only water this plant when the top layer of soil has dried out and even less during the colder months.
Feeding Reverse Spider Plant
To encourage the stunning foliage for which it is grown, the Reverse Spider Plant can be fed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
