If you want to rock your deep shade garden world, the award winning Rockapulco Purple Double Impatiens is your go-to annual this spring. The Rockapulco series of impatiens are specifically bred to grow in the deepest, most humid and hot shade gardens, and thrive especially well in the Midwest and Southern United States because of this. When other annuals take a siesta during the heat of summer, Rockapulco Purple Double Impatiens will bloom on.
A native of the tropics and subtropics of Africa, Madagascar, SW India and SE Asia, Zones 10a through 11b, impatiens thrive in Zones 2-8 as early spring to late summer annuals. Commonly called balsam in tropical areas, impatiens have long had a place in summer shade gardens all over the world. This improved hybrid is hardier, and more disease resistant, making it an easy to care for annual once you give it the growing conditions it prefers.
Rockapulco® Purple Impatiens Care
Soil, fertilizer, watering and proper light...impatiens are easy to maintain once you have given them what they need to thrive. A shady location with high light, not direct sun, is crucial to keep impatiens from getting scorched. Soil preferred is slightly acidic, pH at 5.8 to 6.2, and needs to be fast draining to prevent root rot. Fertilize with a controlled release fertilizer when first planted out and follow up with periodic water soluble fertilizer throughout the bloom season. Water when dry if planted as ground cover, and on a regular schedule for containers or hanging baskets.
Deadheading is not required as these plants will self clean. As always, though, good housekeeping is crucial to preventing insect infestations and soil borne diseases so removing spent blooms from the soil will go a long way to creating healthy plants. Prune or pinch back when they get leggy to maintain a more compact plant and encourage branching. Cut back about ⅓ of the plant growth with sharp shears and it will rebound in a week or two with renewed vigor.
Rockapulco® Purple Impatiens Spacing
Impatiens can grow up to 20 inches tall and spread 24 inches wide so spacing is important. In fact, the closer the plants are together, the taller and leggier they will become and could become lank or limp looking and require more maintenance. Space plants 10 to 12 inches apart to prevent this. Pair impatiens with other shade loving plants like tuberous begonias, torenias, coleus and ipomoea for outstanding color combinations, or choose from the 7 other colors in the Rockapulco series of impatiens for a spring to summer long display.
