Ruby Ann is the strawberry you grow when you want flowers and fruit at the same time. Fragaria × ananassa ‘Ruby Ann’ produces deep ruby-red blooms followed by sweet, medium-sized berries from late spring until frost. Plants reach just 8–12 inches tall and spread 24–36 inches. Unlike typical strawberries with plain white flowers, this everbearing selection carries saturated red petals that hold their color in full sun. The fruit is bright, firm, and flavorful enough for fresh bowls or warm jam.
This variety works as both edible and ornamental, which opens up placement options. Tuck it along a border edge where the flowers can show, or let it trail from a hanging basket so berries dangle within reach for snacking. It fills raised beds quickly with its spreading habit yet stays low enough to avoid shading neighboring crops. Because it is self-pollinating, one plant will still set fruit, though a grouping increases yield.
Ruby Ann Strawberry Care
Plant in full sun for best flowering and fruit set. Choose fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.5–7.0, and avoid sites where tomatoes or peppers grew the year before. Set crowns at soil level with roots fanned outward, spacing plants about 12 inches apart in rows or wider if using as groundcover. Provide about 1–2 inches of water per week and feed lightly but regularly during active growth since strawberries are heavy feeders.
Pinch off blossoms the first season if planting early to direct energy into root development, then allow full production in following years. Remove spent foliage after harvest to reduce disease pressure and improve airflow. Harvest berries when fully red and refrigerate promptly; they also freeze well for smoothies and baking. In colder regions, apply straw mulch after the ground cools to protect crowns through winter.
Growing Ruby Ann Strawberry in Containers
For containers, use a wide pot or hanging basket with drainage and high-quality potting mix enriched with compost. Place plants near the rim so runners can cascade naturally. Container-grown strawberries dry out faster, so check moisture frequently during summer heat. Refresh soil and divide crowded clumps every few years to keep yields strong.
