Plant in full sun to bright partial shade; in hot summer regions, afternoon shade helps preserve leaf color and prevents scorch. Choose well-drained soil (loam or amended clay works) with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water deeply the first 1–2 seasons to establish; afterward, soak during dry spells—especially from bud swell through leaf-out.

Lay a 2–3" mulch ring over the root zone (keep it a few inches off the trunk) to moderate moisture and temperature. Most plants are grafted—promptly remove any shoots that sprout below the graft union.
