Growing Zones
A petite waterfall of color for tight spaces, Ruby Falls drapes its branches in rosy-pink, pea-shaped blossoms on bare wood in early spring, then unfurls deep wine-purple foliage that holds rich tones through summer. With a naturally compact, weeping habit (about 6–8 ft tall × 5–7 ft wide), it’s a plug-and-play focal point for courtyards, entry beds, and large containers—big drama, small footprint.
Ruby Falls Redbud Tree Care
Plant in full sun to bright partial shade; in hot summer regions, afternoon shade helps preserve leaf color and prevents scorch. Choose well-drained soil (loam or amended clay works) with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water deeply the first 1–2 seasons to establish; afterward, soak during dry spells—especially from bud swell through leaf-out.
Lay a 2–3" mulch ring over the root zone (keep it a few inches off the trunk) to moderate moisture and temperature. Most plants are grafted—promptly remove any shoots that sprout below the graft union. Prune right after bloom, thinning only what’s needed to keep the cascading outline open and off the ground; avoid heavy winter cuts that reduce spring flowers.
Generally hardy in USDA Zones 5–9 and tolerant of a range of soils as long as drainage is good.
Ruby Falls Redbud Tree Spacing
As a standalone specimen, allow 7–9 ft of horizontal room so the skirt can drape naturally. For paired plantings flanking walks or gates, space 8–10 ft on center for balanced symmetry. Along low walls or patios, keep 4–6 ft from hardscape for airflow and maintenance.
In containers, use one tree per 20–24"+ diameter pot with excellent drainage and a sturdy base or caddy; place planters 3–4 ft apart for easy access and to showcase the silhouette.
