For a great flavor and good disease resistance, Rutgers Obsession DMR Sweet Basil Plant fits the bill perfectly. Producing soft-green foliage that has a sweet flavor with a slightly spicy taste, it is also delightfully fragrant. With good resistance against mildew, which can often be the bane of basil growers, this cultivar is an easy-to-grow choice. Growing to around two feet high, this basil is perfectly suited to a container.

Rutgers Obsession DMR Sweet Basil Care

Basils are tender plants and grow best when the temperature is around 70 °F. Suitable for growing both indoors and outdoors, this basil should be gradually hardened off before placing outside once all risk of frost is long gone. Rutgers Obsession DMR Sweet Basil prefers to be grown in fertile, free-draining compost and in a sunny spot. A few leaves can be harvested as often as needed throughout the year.

Growing Rutgers Obsession DMR Sweet Basil

This sweet basil can be placed outside during the summer months and brought back indoors to overwinter as the temperatures begin to drop in the fall. If grown indoors, a south-facing windowsill is recommended to provide as much sunlight as possible.

When growing this basil in a container, a pot size of 10-12 inches wide, along with plenty of drainage holes present, is advisable. Since basils like to be grown in fertile and well-drained soil, any compost used should be fresh and have a loose structure.

Watering Rutgers Obsession DMR Sweet Basil

When watering basil, the aim is to keep the soil consistently moist and not to let it completely dry out. However, overwatering can also be a problem and may lead to root rot.

Feeding Rutgers Obsession DMR Sweet Basil

If your basil has been planted in a fertile soil, any supplementary fertilizer is not strictly necessary. However, container-grown plants can benefit from being given a balanced liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.
