Phlox is a mainstay of many gardens, thanks to the long-lasting delicate flowers. The tiny purple flowers feature a yellow eye and will first emerge in the spring. The plant will continuously bloom until the fall, ensuring a long growing season of blooms. The Safari™ Sky South African Phlox will grow as a perennial in USDA zones 10 and 11 and is an annual in other zones.
The Safari™ Sky South African Phlox has small green leaves that complement the lavender flowers, giving this mounding plant a full and lush look. This variety of Phlox is a type of Jamesbrittenia, and it balances the beauty of long-lasting flowers with minimal care. This plant will thrive in most applications, including borders, landscape, mass plantings, and containers.
Safari™ Sky South African Phlox Plant Care
As a native plant to South Africa, the Safari™ Sky South African Phlox is drought tolerant, making it well suited to the high temperatures of summer. Despite being drought-tolerant, the Phlox has average water needs. Water when the top few inches of the soil are dry. The plant is not very fussy about the soil as long as it is well-draining. The Safari™ Sky South African Phlox can live in acidic, alkaline, or neutral soil. Find an area that gets 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day to support healthy growth.
Fed Phlox during the spring. Landscape plantings will need a second feeding midsummer to maintain vibrant blooms while container-grown Phlox need to be fed more often, and fertilizing every other month will promote new growth and blooms. It may not always be necessary, but cut back any overgrowth around midsummer to keep the plant healthy and blooming.
Safari™ Sky South African Phlox Plant Spacing
Phlox are mounding plants, making them great for containers. Usually, 3 to 5 plants can comfortably live in a 12-inch container. The Safari™ Sky South African Phlox should reach 6 to 12 inches in height and spread out 12 to 24 inches. Space Phlox about 6 to 10 inches apart when planting, so the plants have room to grow.
