Salmon Impression Darwin Hybrid Tulip opens large salmon-rose flowers edged in pale pink, providing a warm, two-tone display in the middle of spring. The classic egg-shaped blooms can reach about 5 inches across, carried on sturdy stems around 22 inches tall. The salmon coloring can show apricot undertones toward the center and is contrasted by gray-green foliage.
Salmon Impression belongs to the Darwin Hybrid class, a group valued for substantial flowers, strong stems, and better repeat-bloom potential than many tulip types. It flowers in April to May depending on climate and is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8. The long stems also make excellent cut flowers. Use it in mass plantings, cutting beds, foundation gardens, or large patio containers; its substantial blooms have enough height for the middle layer of a planting.
Salmon Impression Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Care
Grow in full sun to partial shade, with full sun preferred for sturdy stems and dependable flowering. Plant bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep in well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0. Position each bulb with the pointed end facing upward.
Water thoroughly after fall planting. Provide moisture during spring growth when rainfall is scarce and the upper soil begins to dry. As the leaves yellow after flowering, reduce irrigation so dormant bulbs spend summer in comparatively dry soil. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer as shoots emerge in spring, particularly when keeping the bulbs for repeat flowering.
Remove faded flower heads while leaving the stems and green foliage intact. Wait until the leaves have fully yellowed before removing them, since this period replenishes the bulb for the following spring. If tulip fire has been a problem, remove diseased foliage promptly and avoid overhead watering.
Salmon Impression Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Spacing
Space bulbs about 4 to 6 inches apart, grouping several together for a concentrated spring display. For containers, choose a pot at least 10 to 12 inches deep with unrestricted drainage and enough width for a closely planted cluster. Protect containers from repeated deep freezing in colder zones while still exposing the bulbs to the winter chill needed for spring flowering.
Salmon Impression Darwin Hybrid Tulip Bulbs Companion Plants
Amsonia makes a useful landscape partner because its emerging spring foliage develops around the tulips and continues filling the bed as the tulip leaves decline. Deutzia can supply a flowering shrub backdrop in sunny mixed borders, adding a different scale and branching form behind the upright tulip stems. In containers, nemesia pairs well with the salmon coloring and appreciates the cool temperatures and bright exposure that suit tulips during their spring display.
