The unmistakable oblong fruit with pointed ends is the surefire sign of San Marzano tomatoes. These fleshy tomatoes have a sweet flavor, few seeds, and are low acidic, making them excellent for sauce or canning. The vigorous-growing plants will reach 3 to 4 feet tall and generally yield about 20 pounds of fruit, depending on the conditions. Fruit can be picked early while still slightly green, and it will ripen in a few days.
San Marzano Tomato Care
Plant outdoors after there is no longer a chance of frost. Use rich soil high in organic content that has a pH of 5.8 to 7.0. San Marzano Tomato plants require full sun and prefer consistently damp soil.
Growing San Marzano Tomato
The San Marzano Tomato variety is a tall plant that will grow 6 to 8 feet tall and requires full sun. Fruit can be harvested within 78 to 85 days, and fruit picked early will continue to ripen after being picked.
Growing San Marzano Tomatoes in Containers
San Marzano Tomato varieties can grow in a 10-gallon container. Place the container in full sun water while the soil is still damp and use a cage or trellis to support the tall branches.
Watering San Marzano Tomato
Water the San Marzano Tomato while the soil is slightly damp. Drench the soil until it is wet, but make sure the soil is not soggy.
Feeding San Marzano Tomato
Apply a 5-10-10 fertilizer once a month for plants grown in the ground. Potted plants will benefit from a water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks.
