Sangria Ornamental Pepper (Capsicum annuum) introduces a confetti of color that shifts from greens to bright oranges, purples, and reds, all perched upright on compact, upright stems. Each pepper is slender and conical, making an eye-catching display against the plant’s dark green foliage. Harvest occurs in summer into fall, with peppers typically measuring two to three inches long, and offer a milder heat than most ornamental peppers. These peppers bring a decorative element to any setting, and are safe to grow around children.
This ornamental annual can withstand high temperatures and seldom needs deadheading. Deer generally steer clear, which makes it easier to feature as an accent in borders, kitchen gardens, or a pop of color in outdoor containers. The steady show of upright peppers continues for weeks, creating a dynamic focal point in both yard and patio spaces. Sangria Ornamental Pepper is valued more for its ornamental charm than complex flavor, but it can be used in the kitchen in a pinch.
Sangria Ornamental Pepper Care
Plant once nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F, and choose a spot with well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Space them where they receive at least six hours of direct sun. A regular watering schedule helps them remain productive, though avoid soggy conditions. Trim away damaged leaves or spent peppers as needed to encourage a neater appearance and continual color.
Pinching or pruning is generally minimal since the plant’s natural shape is compact. If grown in containers, use a pot with good drainage, and check soil moisture often to keep it moderately moist. Bringing containers indoors during colder months can extend their life slightly, although peppers are an annual and will expire after they stop producing.
Sangria Ornamental Pepper Spacing
Set plants about 16 to 18 inches apart in a row or mass planting to give their branches room to expand. For containers, use a pot at least 8 to 10 inches wide so the root system can develop comfortably.
