The Sayuri Snake Plant, botanically known as Sansevieria sayuri, is also commonly known as the Sansevieria Silver Siam or a type of Mother-in-law’s tongue. Producing elegant erect blades in shades of green and silver earned it its other common name, ‘Metallica’. Being tolerant of different light conditions and its ability to be slightly neglected when it comes to watering makes this an easy houseplant to grow.
Best Locations For Growing Sayuri Snake Plant
Being tolerant of most growing conditions, the Sayuri Snake Plant can be grown in most rooms. However, being toxic to humans and pets, care should be taken when growing this plant around children or animals.
Sayuri Snake Plant Sunlight Requirements
The Sayuri Snake Plant is adaptable to most light levels. Although preferring bright, but indirect light, it can cope with low to medium light conditions as well. Just don’t let it receive any strong south-facing direct light, which can harm its striking foliage.
Sayuri Snake Plant Care
Originating from West Africa, the Sayuri Snake Plant prefers to be kept warm, at a temperature between 65 to 85 °F. Tolerant of most humidity levels, this snake plant tends to grow well in any household environment without the need to be misted. The Sayuri Snake Plant is hardy and tough, but keep it away from any cold drafts as this can cause the plant to struggle. Any dead, damaged or overly large leaves can be removed by cutting away at the base using a pair of clean and sharp scissors or a knife.
Watering Sayuri Snake Plant
As with most snake plants, the Sayuri Snake Plant prefers its soil to be on the drier side and watering is only recommended once the top inch or two of soil has dried out. Being sensitive to overwatering and root rot, any excess water must be allowed to drain away freely before placing it back in its decorative pot. Depending on the growing conditions, water this plant every 2 weeks during the warmer months and every 3 to 4 weeks during winter, although if the soil is still moist it is best to wait until it dries out until watering again.
Feeding Sayuri Snake Plant
Although not strictly necessary, feeding during the growing season can encourage strong growth and the colorful foliage for which it is grown. From spring until fall, this Sayuri Snake Plant can be fed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4 to 6 weeks.
