The Shumard Oak Tree is always lovely but puts on a spectacular fall display. Also known as Quercus shumardii, this deciduous tree stands up to 80 feet tall and 50 to 60 feet across. The foliage measures 4 to 8 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide and has the traditional deeply lobed oak shape. Leaves exhibit dark green throughout the spring and summer. The leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange by fall before dropping. The Shumard Oak Tree produces sizable acorns that add to the visual appeal and are a food source for various animals.
The broad, open crown becomes rounded as the tree matures. The Shumard Oak Tree is pest and disease resistant, ensuring its longevity. This Oak tree grows well in environments that are challenging for many trees. Use this beauty as a shade tree or to line a street.
Shumard Oak Tree Care
Plant this Oak tree in full sun. The Shumard Oak Tree is not picky about soil pH and can handle alkaline, neutral, and acidic soil. The soil should be fertile, moist, and well drained. Young trees need consistent water. Established trees are drought tolerant but appreciate water during a dry period.
Prune Shumard Oak Tree in the winter when it is dormant. Regular pruning is necessary for the first few years to establish a balanced and pleasing shape.
Shumard Oak Tree Spacing
Space Shumard Oak Trees 50 feet apart, center on center, to create a row of trees. Plant trees about 60 feet back from buildings and clear of utility lines. The area underneath the canopy is excellent for a shade-loving ground cover and spring-blooming bulbs.
