This drought-tolerant plant native to South Africa is known by many names, including Crassula ovata, blue bird jade, lucky jade, and silver dollar jade. The bluish-green hue of the rounded leaves is almost silver, giving it the nickname Silver Dollar Jade. The unique silver color is contrasted with the dark-red edges this plant develops with adequate light. Silver Dollar Jade can grow star-shaped white to pink flowers in the summer. The Crassula genus of plants can be toxic to pets.

Best Locations For Growing Silver Dollar Jade

Silver Dollar Jade will grow well in a window that receives bright, indirect sunlight. A room in your home that gets about six to eight hours of sunlight a day is ideal. This plant is especially striking at mature size and would be a nice statement piece in a living room.

Silver Dollar Jade Sunlight Requirements

Provide Silver Dollar Jade with plenty of bright, indirect sunlight for a minimum of 4-6 hours daily. A few feet away from a south-facing window, or near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves of this succulent plant, so watch for any sunburn in bright light.

Silver Dollar Jade Care

Silver Dollar Jade struggles with temperature fluctuations and will go dormant if too hot and will fail to grow if too cold. This succulent requires well-draining soil. Succulent soil blends are perfect for keeping Silver Dollar Jade happy.

Watering Silver Dollar Jade

Silver Dollar Jade is drought resistant, making it a perfect easy-care plant for beginner plant parents. Allow the potting soil to completely dry out between waterings. Water it about every three weeks, depending on how dry your climate/ household is. Hold off on watering during the fall and winter when growth slows. Never let this plant sit in water, which can lead to root rot.

Feeding Silver Dollar Jade

Use an all-purpose succulent fertilizer sparingly, about every two to three months, when actively growing. Further feeding is not necessary for this plant.
