Skinny Genes® Columnar Oak Tree has the stature of an oak but fits into narrow spaces where a broad canopy would be too much. This tightly fastigiate Quercus x bimundorum 'JFS-KW2QX' grows upright with glossy, very dark green summer foliage that stays clean thanks to good mildew resistance. Yellow to tawny yellow fall color follows, sometimes with warm orange tones depending on site and season. We see this as a smart choice for driveways, property lines, and formal entries where height is welcome but width is limited.

This hybrid oak was selected from second-generation seedlings related to Crimson Spire™ oak, with English oak heritage contributing to its upright structure and possible winter leaf retention. It matures around 40 to 50 feet tall while staying about 8 to 12 feet wide, creating a dense vertical screen without spreading far into lawns or walkways. The leaves are deciduous, and mature trees produce acorns that support wildlife. Use it as a slim shade tree, a pair of matching front-yard columns, or a long-lived privacy planting along a narrow boundary.

Skinny Genes® Columnar Oak Tree Care

Plant Skinny Genes® Columnar Oak Tree in full sun for the best branching, leaf density, and fall color. It grows in average, well-drained soil, including loam and clay loam, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH preferred, though established trees can adapt to mildly alkaline soils when drainage is good. Give young trees enough open sky and root space so the columnar crown can develop evenly.

Water deeply after planting, then soak the root zone whenever the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feel dry during the first growing season. Once established, this oak handles periodic dry weather, but curled or dull leaves during heat are a sign that supplemental water is needed. Fertilizer is rarely needed in decent soil. In late fall, the tree enters dormancy and may hold brown leaves into winter before shedding them.

Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant, removing crossing branches, broken wood, and any competing leaders. Lower limbs can be raised gradually over several years for clearance, but avoid stripping the trunk too quickly. In areas where oak wilt is a concern, make pruning cuts only during the safest local dormant window and avoid summer pruning.

Skinny Genes® Columnar Oak Tree Spacing

Space Skinny Genes® Columnar Oak Tree 8 to 12 feet apart for a tall screen or closer visual rhythm, and allow more room from buildings or paved areas where mature trunk and root growth need clearance. Around in-ground plantings, plant yew shrubs, barrenwort, sedum, or hellebores where the design benefits from lower plants beneath the oak’s vertical form. For container growing, start young trees in a large, heavy 25-gallon or larger planter with drainage, knowing this is a temporary or highly managed use rather than a permanent small-pot tree.
