Sky Fire coleus definitely perks up a pot. A touch of lime colors the ruffled-edges of reddish leaves with splotches of burgundy at the center. The colorful leaves look great all summer and the plant tolerates sun or shade. The color may change slightly if in shade, but it stays vibrant in the sun.
Sky Fire (Solenostemon scutellarioides) has an upright growth habit, reaching about 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide. It’s a perfect plant as a thriller in a container. Or plant in the landscape, where it also does great. Commonly called coleus, gardeners may run across this plant labeled Plectranthus scutellarioides.
Sky Fire Coleus Care
Water once the ground has dried out completely. Fertilize as needed once new growth starts to appear. Use a high quality potting mix in the container. Some gardeners don’t like their coleus plants to bloom. A lot of the new coleuses on the market are bred to hold off their flowers until late in the season. If the plant does bloom, just snip off the flowers and use them as a cut flower in a vase. FYI: bees like the flowers.
These plants can be grown indoors year round or during the winter. Only use healthy plants to bring inside and bring the plants inside before the first frost. The plants will probably need additional humidity by spritzing or adding pebbles trays. But be sure not to overwater the plants. If you choose to introduce your plants outside the next spring, do so slowly and avoid big changes in temperature for the plants.
Sky Fire Coleus Spacing
In a 12-inch wide container use one as the thriller or plant three for a monoculture. In the ground, plant 12 to 15 inches apart.
