Snow Crystal Double Fringed Tulip Bulbs produce broad, peony-like white flowers packed with ruffled petals edged in a fine crystalline fringe. Blooms open about 4 to 4½ inches across, with soft green striping near the base of the outer petals that adds another layer of detail. Plants stay compact at roughly 12 to 14 inches tall, which keeps the heavy flowers close to the foliage. We really like this tulip near walkways and patios, where the texture of the petals can be seen at close range.
This late-spring tulip extends the season after earlier varieties have finished, and the fully double flowers also perform well as cut stems. Its compact habit makes it useful along border fronts, in massed groups, and in containers. The large blooms can be more vulnerable to severe spring storms, so a somewhat sheltered site helps preserve their form. Plant in USDA zones 3 to 8 for the best cold-season performance.
Snow Crystal Double Fringed Tulip Bulbs Care
Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil. Plant bulbs about 6 to 8 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is suitable.
Water thoroughly after planting in the fall. Provide moderate moisture during active spring growth when rainfall is limited. Reduce watering as the foliage begins to yellow and allow the soil to dry more during summer dormancy. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer as shoots emerge in spring, or add a light feeding at planting.
Deadhead spent flowers once the petals drop, but leave the foliage intact until it yellows naturally. Remove declining leaves only after they have finished feeding the bulb. In colder areas, a light winter mulch can help moderate repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Snow Crystal Double Fringed Tulip Bulbs Spacing
Space bulbs about 4 to 6 inches apart, grouping 10 or more together for a fuller white display. For containers, use a pot at least 10 to 12 inches deep with generous drainage and enough width to keep the bulbs from becoming crowded. In zones 3 to 5, protect exposed containers from repeated deep freezes by moving them to an unheated sheltered location.
Snow Crystal Double Fringed Tulip Bulbs Companion Plants
Bleeding heart makes a strong perennial partner because its spring growth overlaps with the tulip season and adds an entirely different flower form and broader foliage. Boxwoods can provide a clean evergreen backdrop that makes the white blooms stand out in formal beds and foundation plantings. In containers, lobelia can spill over the rim beneath the upright tulip stems in evenly moist, well-drained soil.
