- Use As A Filler In Containers
Add a burst of color to an annual bed or container with the Solenia® Scarlet Begonia or Begonia x hiemalis. The bright red double flowers bloom from spring through summer. The ruffle in the flower petals is repeated in the dark green leaves, adding more texture and dimension. This begonia is a long-blooming plant, and deadheading is unnecessary for added convenience.
The Solenia® Scarlet Begonia has a mounded growth habit and a well-branched structure. Feature this lovely flowering annual in a container where it takes on the role of filler, or near the front of a bed so the double blooms can be admired. Create a lovely mass planting by grouping several begonias together. This begonia is mildew resistant, reducing the risk of powdery mildew and other fungi that can ruin a landscape.
Solenia® Scarlet Begonia Care
Part to full sun keeps the begonia consistently blooming. A minimum of four hours of sunlight is necessary, but six or more hours is best. Begonias need moist conditions, so water before the soil dries out, but don’t let the soil become soggy. Give the plant a rich, moist, well-drained soil. Begonias are heavy feeders, so fertilize every two weeks to keep the plant lush and full of blooms.
The Solenia® Scarlet Begonia is treated as an annual in most climates and cannot handle chilly winter weather. Cut back growth and allow the plant to overwinter indoors. The plant is unlikely to grow and bloom indoors, but will resume growth when the weather warms up outdoors.
Solenia® Scarlet Begonia Spacing
The Solenia® Scarlet Begonia grows 8 to 12 inches tall and wide. Create a continuous planting by spacing plants 8 to 12 inches apart or feature two plants in a 12-inch container.
