Are you looking for an easy-care plant that actually looks amazing? The Song of India Dracaena (Dracaena reflexa) features flashy foliage of smooth, narrow, lemon-lime leaves. It has a strong upright growth habit, and the leaves are arranged in a whorl pattern around the stem.
This slow grower is a tropical tree native to islands of Mozambique and Madagascar. Song of India grows about four inches per year, and indoors can reach a maximum height of 3 to 6 feet tall, and in the wild can reach 18 feet tall.
Best Locations For Growing Song Of India Dracaena
This plant will fit perfectly on a desktop or bookshelf and won’t quickly outgrow its home. Song of India is perfect for the novice gardener and looks great as a table plant in the home or office, or as a floor plant if you find a larger specimen. Be sure to keep this plant away from curious pets and kids because it is known to be slightly toxic.
Song Of India Dracaena Sunlight Requirements
To keep your Dracaena healthy, provide it with adequate bright indirect light. Avoid placing your plant in direct sun, as it may scorch the leaves. Not enough light could lead to a less vibrant, leggy plant. You will want to ensure that your plant gets at least four hours of sunlight per day.
Song Of India Dracaena Care
Provide your Song of India Dracaena with a quick-draining potting soil to prevent overwatering. If your soil blend feels too heavy and drains poorly, consider adding some coarse sand or perlite to the mix. This plant is typically “self-pruning” and will shed old leaves for new ones. Use sharp, clean gardening shears to trim this plant if you’d like a more bushy, full shape.
Watering Song Of India Dracaena
This plant prefers to dry out between waterings, so wait until the soil looks and feels dry and then give it a good soak. Song of India requires less water in the winter. Dracaena loves high humidity levels and would benefit from a humidity tray or regular misting.
Feeding Song Of India Dracaena
When your Song of India plant is actively growing during the spring and summer, fertilize it with a general-purpose houseplant fertilizer. Feed every two weeks during the growing season and hold off on feeding during the winter.
