The Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine produces large fruit that are excellent for eating fresh or canning. The mature fruit of Vitis rotundafolia is dark black and about the size of a golf ball. This deciduous vine produces green foliage in the spring before fragrant white flowers bloom. Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vines grow in zones 7 through 9 and produce a high yield; fruit is ready to harvest from August through November. This adaptable plant is disease resistant and can handle drought, heat, and mildew. Prune the Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine in late winter or early spring to remove crossed branches.

Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine Care

Plant Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine in a sunny spot that receives at least six hours of direct light. The vines prefer rich, loamy soil that is moist but well-drained. Plant vines roughly 12 to 15 feet apart.

Growing Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine

This plant reaches 6 to 8 feet wide and 10 to 15 feet tall. This variety starts growing in early spring. The Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine produces grapes in the second or third year after planting.
Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vines grow well in containers. Use rich, moist, well-drained soil and water the plant when the top few inches of potting soil are dry. Repot every one to two years as the plant becomes rootbound.

Watering Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine

Grape vines like damp conditions. Do not let the soil dry out, but avoid overly wet or soggy soil. Water weekly or as needed to keep the root ball damp.

Feeding Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vine

Fertilize Southern Home Muscadine Grape Vines in early spring during the first two growing seasons. Young grape vines need a balanced fertilizer early on and thrive without being fed afterward.
