The glossy, spear-shaped leaves of the Mint Spearmint have scalloped edges and can be picked at any time during the growing season. Leaves can be used fresh or dried. Mint Spearmint is a common ingredient in teas, cocktails, and jellies. Routinely pick leaves to promote more branching and new growth. Harvest leaves at any time, but the leaves will have a more intense flavor during the spring and early summer. The foliage will still have a strong mint flavor, but it may be diminished after the purple-blue blooms during the late summer.

Spearmint Mint Plant Care

Plant Mint Spearmint in the spring in a spot with full sun to partial shade. Soil should be neutral, rich, and well-draining. The upright growth habit get up to 3 feet tall and the plants can spread quite aggressively if planted in the ground.

Growing Mint Spearmint

Mint Spearmint needs full sun to partial shade. Mature plants will reach 36 inches tall and spread 24 to 36 inches. Mint Spearmint is a fast-growing plant that can quickly overtake an area. We suggest growing this plant in a container or in a place where it will not overwhelm other plants when it takes over. In the garden, space plants 3 feet apart.

Growing Spearmint Mint Plant in Containers

Select a container that is at least 8 inches in diameter for Mint Spearmint. Container-grown plants require water more frequently but otherwise have similar care needs as plants in the ground.

Watering Spearmint Mint Plant

Allow soil to mostly dry out before watering. Thoroughly saturate the soil when watering, but avoid waterlogging the plant.

Feeding Spearmint Mint Plant

Mint Spearmint is a vigorous grower that will do very well without fertilizing. Top dress the soil with organic compost in the fall or spring to give the plants a boost of nutrition; otherwise, no additional feeding is necessary.
