Although coleus is a commonly used foliage plant in containers and landscapes, Splish Splash Coleus is a unique color variant of coleus that you are going to want to include in your garden. Bold red splashes of color on chartreuse green leaves adorn this warm season annual and provide spring and summer interest in your full shade or full sun location. Want to keep this unique color going year round? Bring healthy plants indoors for the winter before frost and provide them with high light and humidity to expand your enjoyment of this plant year round.
A tender perennial, native to SouthEast Asia, Africa and Australia, Zones 10a to 11b where summers are long and hot, coleus is a warm season annual in Zones 2-9. It is heat tolerant and keeps its brilliant color patterns regardless of whether it is in full sun or shade, making this truly the most versatile foliage plant for your spring to summer garden. Grown primarily for its foliage, coleus will bloom, sporting a rather unremarkable flower that should be removed to allow the plant to focus on its best feature, its leaves.
Splish Splash® Coleus Care
Set new plants out after the danger of the last frost has passed, and water on a regular schedule when it is dry or if it is in a container. Using a half strength water soluble fertilizer will keep this plant looking its best. It tolerates the heat, but enjoys some shade in the hottest of climates. Soil pH preferred is mildly acidic to neutral at 6.0 to 6.5. Thrips, aphids and whiteflies are a potential problem as well as downy mildew. Using a systemic insecticide and providing good air circulation will help prevent any issues.
Deadheading is needed for any flowers that appear as they will cause the plant to go to seed and die. Pinching back the foliage will encourage branching and keep the plant from looking lank or leggy. Regular pruning of this upright annual can help control growth and maintain a compact appearance. This plant makes a wonderful houseplant, but use caution when it is around pets as it can be toxic if eaten.
Splish Splash® Coleus Spacing
Space plants 12 to 20 inches apart to allow good air circulation to discourage plant disease and insect infestation. Splish Splash Coleus will grow 30 inches tall and spread up to 20 inches wide so give it some room to grow. Due to its size, pair it with low growing sun or shade loving annuals for an outstanding display in your cottage or container garden. As a member of the mint family, you will find this an easy care annual for your garden or containers.
