Bright-green feathery fronds give the Sprengeri Fern its distinctive look. This plant features reaching vines covered in spines or wispy foliage, which contrasts large-leaf plants nicely. Also known as Asparagus aethiopicus, Sprenger's asparagus, and asparagus fern, use this plant to add a burst of greenery and texture to a space. Give this plant the care and attention it needs, and it will quickly fill in and put its lacy fronds on full display.
Best Locations For Growing Sprengeri Fern
A warm area with increased humidity is best for Sprengeri Fern. Lots of moisture in the air will keep the lacey fronds lush, vibrant, and green. Place the Sprengeri Fern in a brightly lit bathroom, kitchen, or porch. You can grow this plant in dry areas, but be prepared to use a pebble tray or humidifier to help this fern feel at home.
Sprengeri Fern Sunlight Requirements
Sprengeri Fern can be grown as an outdoor plant, but it also makes a lovely houseplant. Plants grown indoors have different care needs. Asparagus ferns grown inside need bright indirect light. A well-lit area will help the plant settle in and push out long and full vines.
Sprengeri Fern Care
Under the right conditions, the Asparagus fern grows very fast. Prune the plant if it is outgrowing your space. Use clean sheers to remove excess foliage at the base. Repot often as the thick, tuberous roots of the Sprengeri Fern can quickly outgrow its pot. Divide the plant when repotting by gently separating the roots. The divisions can be repotted in the same-sized pots. Plants that are not divided should receive a larger pot.
Watering Sprengeri Fern
Plants grown in high humidity will not need water often. Increased dampness in the air will keep this fern hydrated—water when the top inch of the soil is dry.
Feeding Sprengeri Fern
Feed Sprengeri Fern using balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Apply plant food monthly when the plant is pushing out new growth. Plants do not need to be fed when they are not actively growing, which can happen during the winter.
